GRAND RAPIDS - Mitt Romney, former Massachusetts governor and Michigan native, today helped Congressman Pete Hoekstra fire up supporters of his gubernatorial campaign.

"There is nothing holding back Michigan besides its government," said Romney, a leading contender for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. "Pete will do what it takes to actually get Michigan moving again."

More than 100 people gathered at DeVos Place to hear short speeches and mingle with Romney and Hoekstra, R-Holland.

Remarks centered on getting government out of the way so the state and country can thrive.

"Let's get bureaucracy out of the way, shrink the size of government and fix the tax code,'' Hoekstra said

The two men go a ways back: Hoekstra had endorsed Romney during his presidential campaign in 2008.

The congressman continues to lead his opponents for the nomination with 28 percent support among likely GOP primary voters, according to the April Rasmussen Reports survey. However, the survey shows nearly one-out-of-three primary voters or 32 percent are still undecided.

Businessman Rick Snyder was at 14 percent, state Attorney General Mike Cox again earned 13 percent of the vote, and Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard is at 9 percent. The report does not reference the other candidate in the race specifically, state Sen. Tom George, R-Kalamazoo, but said 5 percent of primary voters said they prefer some other candidate in the race.

Tickets for the event were $100 per person, $25 for students and veterans and $5,000 per host.

Special Michigan Event with Pete Hoekstra & Mitt Romney April 28th

Please consider attending this event April 28 and invite some of your Michigan friends to attend as well. If you look at Mitt’s West Michigan Leadership Team, you’ll notice that Congressman Hoekstra is the very first person listed on Mitt’s West Michigan leadership team for the 2008 primaries. Mitt Romney has thanked Pete on several occasions for supporting him so early during Mitt’s run for the presidency and especially marveled at how many people Pete contacted in Iowa going door to door on behalf of Mitt. When Mitt won the primary, look who was one of the main guests there celebrating the victory: Look at Middle Video

Mitt and Pete go back even further than that. While reading Mitt’s book Turnaround, I noticed that one of the companies that helped get the Olympics back on track shortly after Mitt was Herman Miller which Pete was in charge of for years before he became a congressman.

Long story short, Pete has been there for Mitt for years and now Mitt is repaying the favor as best he can. Mitt supports Pete in his run for governor of Michigan. Pete has been leading the polls for a few months now, but he has some well-funded competition in the republican primary. This event will not only be a way to give a little financial boost to Pete’s campaign, it will also be a great chance to meet the next governor of the state of Michigan and the next President of the United States.

Thanks everyone! I hope you’re having a wonderful spring so far!

PETE HOEKSTRA WINS DEBATE - DEMONSTRATES WHY HE'S IN THE LEAD

April 13, 2010

Holland, MI - Republican Gubernatorial candidate Pete Hoekstra impressed the crowd at the Bay Area Republican candidate debate this evening in Birch Run. He was the clear winner, demonstrating a clear conservative vision for Michigan and a strong grasp of the facts.

"I enjoyed the event this evening. It provided an opportunity for me to articulate what Michigan will look like under a Hoekstra administration. And it provided a clear opportunity to talk directly to Republican primary voters who are looking for someone who has the experience and guts to turn Michigan around," Hoekstra said.

Hoekstra presented a strong set of responses to questions dealing with jobs and economic development. He also explained in detail how Michigan's tax structure needs to change by reducing taxes and making government smaller. He specifically detailed his record of supporting tax cuts, protecting the second amendments, and standing up for states rights.

"I can promise this; under a Hoekstra administration, the tax burden on Michigan citizens will be less than it is today and government will be smaller. I have a long and proud record of supporting tax cuts and will bring my conservative government philosophy to Lansing," Hoekstra said.
"At a time when so many Michigan voters are looking for a different direction, I felt this event was crucial in allowing me as a candidate to outline my vision," Hoekstra said. "Unfortunately, two of my competitors didn't feel this event or the Mid-Michigan and Tri-Cities region was important enough to appear on the stage with the rest of us."
