Coast to Coast Newspapers Statewide Agree Hoekstra Best Choice For Michigan

Dear Friends,

I am so proud to tell you today about the statewide newspaper endorsements that our campaign for governor received today. All across the state, our message of electing a strong and fiscally conservative governor to lead Michigan is resonating. And today, the Detroit Free Press, Grand Rapids Press and Muskegon Chronicle all endorsed Pete in his bid to become Governor of Michigan!

From coast to coast newspapers agree that Pete has the experience and ability to make tough decisions and find real solutions for our state, starting from day one.

The Detroit Free Press said:

“The GOP's best candidate is Pete Hoekstra, the congressman from Holland who has represented Michigan's conservative 2nd District since 1993. Hoekstra is a Republican's Republican -- staunchly pro-business and anti-abortion; skeptical of government regulation and defensive of state authority over federal imposition. …

Pete “has a creative streak and knows how to stretch a dollar -- useful skills in tight fiscal times that are likely to be with state government for a while. Citing his traditionally penurious Dutch background, Hoekstra is fond of saying his heritage taught him ‘how to make a penny squeal.’ …

The Grand Rapids Press said:

“Mr. Hoekstra has shown that he fully absorbed the lessons of his first insurgent campaign: stay in touch with the folks back home. He would be equally responsive to citizens of Michigan as governor. As a lawmaker, Mr. Hoekstra has a solid record of fiscal conservatism, something the state needs more than ever right now. The former Herman Miller executive would seek to create an environment welcoming to business by streamlining regulations and reducing taxes. …

“His record in Congress suggests he would be able to work with Democrats, and wouldn’t hesitate to criticize fellow Republicans if he saw the need. As chair and then ranking Republican of the House Intelligence Committee, Mr. Hoekstra was a vocal critic of President Bush’s attempts to exclude Congress in major intelligence decisions.”

The Muskegon Chronicle said:

“Pete Hoekstra of Holland is the candidate with the experience and the background Michigan needs. His 18 years as a Congressman representing West Michigan provided him with the legislative experience a governor needs. He understands the process, he knows how to build a coalition, he’s done it. One of the biggest criticisms of Gov. Jennifer Granholm is not a lack of ideas but the inability to bring them to fruition. …

“Hoekstra’s West Michigan practicality will keep things simple and accountable in the Legislature and throughout government. A straightforward guy who believes government should follow common sense, Hoekstra pledges to hold state officials and employees accountable

“His business experience at Herman Miller enables him to talk the talk with both management and labor. He gets what’s troubling business, and he understands the needs of workers. He also knows the importance of marketing, which Michigan desperately needs.”
